Synchronous vs Asynchronous

Synchronous learning takes place when two or more people are communicating in real time. Sitting in a classroom, talking on the telephone, chatting via instant messaging are examples of synchronous communication. So is sitting in a classroom a world away from where the teacher is speaking via teleconferencing. Think "live."
Asynchronous learning, on the other hand, is thought to be more flexible. The teaching takes place at one time and is preserved for the learner to participate in whenever the time is most convenient for him or her. Technology such as email, ecourses, online forums, audio and video recordings make this possible. Even snail mail would be considered asynchronous. Fancy word for convenience.

Blog Reflection #5

  • What specific technologies did you learn about this semester that you think will be valuable to use in your future classroom? I really enjoyed learning about everything this semester. I don't know that I have a favorite. But I really love the idea of having a classroom blogger page. Where all my students can access the page to critique each other artwork, after I have uploaded photos of everyone's work. My brain is just swirling with all of these new ideas to really implement technology into my classroom.
  • Why will this technology be valuable? I know it will be valuable to me as a teacher because having a class blogger page will allow my students to get ahold of me 24/7. With the critiques being done on the web it will give me more in class working time with my students.

Blog Reflection #4

What benefits do spreadsheets offer teachers?
Spreadsheets allow teachers to organize large sets of data. Having their students grades, and information in this format helps teachers to keep all this info right at hand.

What are the greatest benefits for students when they use spreadsheets in the classroom?
They are particularly useful for classroom learning because they can do so many things and be used for so many purposes. With spreadsheets, you can organize sets of info; calculate lots of numbers; analyze and make decisions; and create graphs that provide interesting and attractive visual representations of numerical data.

Can you envision yourself using spreadsheets in your classroom? Why or why not?
Me personally using them yes, but will my students almost a 100% no to that. As a teacher I could find myself using it to keep track of students grades, and overall class averages. I use them now for my personally bills. Being an art teach my students will never need to use spreadsheets in the classroom, it just doesn't pertain to art in any way.

After using visual thinking software, describe the 21st century skills you think were most valuable to you in the learning process?
By learning to use visual thinking software, you can easily help students use it as part of their learning activities.  Most valuable to me in the learning process was organizing and analyzing info. With this students can research topics and then display large amounts of info in a variety of formats and organize it in ways that make sense to them on concept mapping software. This makes it easier to understand concepts and helps reveal relationships and patterns.

How does multimedia allow you as a teacher to appeal to a wide diversity of learners?
Multimedia allows you to reach every student, know matter their different types of learning.  There are so many combinations of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity for multimedia. You can reach all different kinds of learners in every way. Personally, I'm one of those students who needs to see it to believe it. I'm also very tactile, students some times need to be hands on to understand things easier.
